Research
We are recruiting hospitals from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden for the HaH study!
Definition of Hospital-at-Home (HaH):
Acute clinical activities that bring hospital staff, equipment, technology, medication, and expertise to selected patients in their own homes or nursing homes—serving as an alternative to acute hospital admission.
The concept has been shown to:
-
Be safe for patients
-
Improve patient autonomy
-
Increase patient satisfaction
-
Reduce hospital length of stay
-
Be more cost-effective

Despite its many advantages, successful implementation and scaling of HaH require:

-
System-wide knowledge of HaH
-
HaH training for all involved
-
Leadership and organization at all levels
-
Solutions for technical and regulatory challenges
-
Tested, successful HaH implementation strategies
NorDigHE – A New Nordic HaH Education Program
NorDigHE has been developed by hospitals and educational institutions in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway to support HaH implementation. The program aims to provide practical knowledge and competencies for HaH, including:
• Digital tools, legislation, data protection, and ethics
• Implementation, organization, and service innovation in practice
• Identifying patient needs and delivering HaH services
• Follow-up and support for individual patients and caregivers
Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT)
We are investigating whether education and implementation support can facilitate HaH. The study includes:

Intervention group:
-
A 2-hour local workshop
-
NorDigHE education offered to clinical colleagues
-
Implementation guide, support, and hotline access
-
Regular status follow-ups in meetings
Control group:
-
Receives the education with a 6-month delay as a quality improvement initiative
Study goals:
-
HaH implementation at the organizational level
-
Increased knowledge and motivation among staff
-
Patient outcomes such as hospital length of stay, readmission rates, and mortality

Who can participate?
We are looking for hospitals in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden that:
-
Have acutely admitted patients
-
Have or can establish the necessary infrastructure for HaH, including IT platforms, communication systems, and data exchange agreements
-
Have a leadership structure that can support HaH implementation
